Knowing About School Districts: The Texas State Accountability Ratings
When you are relocating from out-of-town, or if you have begun searching for a new local home, if you have children, the debate over school districts can be overwhelming. I grew up in Tennessee, studied in Louisiana, and moved to Texas as an adult. I've been in Dallas since 1991, but when my husband and I searched for our first home, we found ourselves struggling with the decision over which area would best suit our needs.
First, you want to look at the big picture: beyond the elementary-level, how does your district perform in middle school and high school?
Welcome to the world of the TEA. The Texas Education Agency oversees our state's accountability system. In layman's terms: it tells you whether or not the students are learning the materials required by the TEA.
The campus and school district ratings are based on performance by all students and in all sub-populations identified by the state (ie, African-American, Hispanic, White and Economically Disadvantaged).
On its website, you can search every school district in Texas and see their current and historical performance ratings.
To make things a little simpler, I will add links on my website to most of Collin County's school districts. You can go direct to the source before you begin your househunt, and be fully educated on the education you can expect for your children in each area.
